An unknown Roman Quarter found in the heart of Metz

A team from the Institut National de Recherches Archéologiques Préventives (Inrap) is in the process of excavating a Roman quarter in the heart of the city of Metz. Curated by the State (Drac of the Lorraine region), the excavation of this vast site (15,000 m2) precedes the construction of a car park under the future Centre-Pompidou-Metz. This operation will employ at least fifteen archaeologists for a total of 5,300 working days, including post excavation analysis,. until February 2007.

The A19 motorway. Bodies offered to the Gods.

At the point where the Beauce and Gâtinais regions meet, a team of 60 Inrap archaeologists is currently excavating the site of the future A19 motorway between Artenay and Courtenay (Loiret). Curated by the Ministry of Culture (Drac région Centre), this research is financed by Arcour, the future motorway operator. Of the 1,300 hectares of land concerned, over 90% has already been explored. Among the one hundred or so sites identified, that of Neuville-aux-Bois has yielded numerous structures. Enclosures, ditches, insubstantial buildings and granaries have been excavated.

In advance of work on the Evreux city bypass, a team from the Institut National de Recherches Archéologiques Préventives (Inrap) is studying a vast site from the second Bronze Age and the Gallo-Roman period.

A team of archaeologists from the Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives (Inrap), directed by Didier Busson (Department of the History of Architecture and Archaeology of Paris) is at present uncovering a new aspect of the history of Lutetia: one of the first residential quarters of the antique town.

A Roman farm on the shore of the Antibes lagoon

A team from Inrap is at present digging on the shore of the Antibes lagoon. The site, not far from the heart of the antique agglomeration of Antipolis, is being excavated prior to the extension of the Bas-Lauvert Urban Development Zone, at Antibes-Juan-les-Pins.

Discovery of a Roman mosaic at Villelaure (Vaucluse)

Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, Minister of culture and communication, recently announced that a polychrome mosaic dating from the Roman period had been discovered at Villelaure (Vaucluse) during an archaeological evaluation carried out by an Inrap team (Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives).

In advance of the creation of a ZAC (Zone d'amènagement concerté) by the community of communes of Dinan, a team from the Institut national de recherches archélogiques préventives (Inrap) excavated until February 2006 the site of Alleux in the commune of Taden (Côtes-d'Armor).
