Archaeology of Migrations

Analysis of DNA which is sometimes preserved in the bone remains of people from the past allows us to gain valuable insight into the populations to which they belonged. In particular, genome analysis, made possible by spectacular progress in molecular biology, allows us to identify not only the intermixing of different groups whose paths crossed within a given area, but also the phenotype of individuals whose remains are studied. As such, paleogenomics allows us to considerably refine our understanding of the past.
Eva-Maria Geigl, has a background in chemistry and biology; she obtained a PhD in Molecular Radiation Biology in Munich and undertook post-doctoral research at Stanford with the international human gene-sequencing project, and then at the Jacques Monod Institute in Paris on the architecture and evolution of human chromosomes. She set up a research group and a high-containment lab at the Jacques Monod Institute to develop paleogenetic methods for the study of human evolution and of past human and animal populations.
