The roots of war

Jean Guilaine has been Research Director at the CNRS, Studies Director at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and Professor at the Collège de France, where he held the European Civilisations from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age Chair (1994-2007). He is a member of the Institute (Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres). His research focuses on the shift from hunting to farming and the emergence of rural communities in Europe and the Mediterranean basin, the formation of complex societies in the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age and the impact of the earliest anthropic aggressions on the environment. He has led archaeological excavations in Cyprus, Italy, France, Andorra and Spain and written major works that have found favour with scholars and the general public alike (France Before France, 1980; The Shared Sea. The Mediterranean Before Writing, 1994).
