Jewish ghettos, synagogues, ritual baths, yeshivas, latrines, cemeteries…
The development of preventive archaeology since the 1990’s has led to the discovery of numerous remains, most until now unknown, of the Jewish presence in Europe.
In this publication, specialists from France and elsewhere confront archeological and historical research and present a synthesis of the contribution of archaeology through Albanian, German, Spanish, French, Hungarian, Italian and Czech examples.
These new data contribute to our knowledge of European Judaism since Antiquity and enable us to better apprehend its very early existence in Medieval society, until the expulsions during the 8th, 14th and 15th centuries.
The challenge and importance of preserving these remains, the heritage of all Europeans, is discussed.
Published with support from the European Commission, the Rothschild Foundation – Alain de Rothschild Institute, and the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah.
Paul Salmona is director of Cultural Development and Communication for the Institut National de Recherches Archéologiques Préventives.
