La civilisation romaine, qui se déroule sur douze siècles en Italie, du VIIIe siècle avant notre ère au Ve siècle de notre ère, s’est constamment nourrie d’influences et d’emprunts. Elle s’étend hors d'Italie dès les IIIe-IIe siècles avant notre ère. En -120, est créée la province romaine de Transalpine (qui correspond à peu près au sud de la France actuelle) et en -52, César conquiert la Gaule.
